Our home, in the making.
From major home renovations, decor updates, to fresh churned butter and warm sourdough loaves, we are endlessly making our home.
When I call my photographer to book our next set of family pictures he always asks, “How many of you are there this year?”
Growing, changing family dynamics is part of the package of fostercare. More children, less children, this gender, that age; all affect how we use our home. Fostercare has a list of rules around bedroom requirements. Since we don’t have a bedroom for each of the eight children in the home, we have had to play “musical bedrooms” on a few occasions to comply with the rules.
Although this can sometimes feel daunting, it is also an enjoyable way to stir up some creativity and redesign a space to serve the precious souls that rest their heads each night.
Our budget could not accommodate a home the size our family needed in pristine condition. We knew going in our future home would require renovations. In all honesty, “a project” was as high on my husbands wishlist as “trees” was on mine. Alan is a talented designer and planner by trade, and a child at heart. Building and creating a functional space, especially for his family, is his version of adult Lego.
Our home was originally built in the early eighties. It has had some major additions since, and as it appears, many upgrades by a DIY’er with far less perfectionism standards than my husband. (In all fairness, most do.) In our two years, we’ve sprung a multitude of leaks, blown countless breakers, and are giving up hope of ever knowing the functions of all the light? switches.
This has handed us with an armful of renovations started all at once. Some out of necessary of repair, some out of necessity of function, and some out of “got to do this, before you can do that.”
Combine all this with a frugal budget and I predict my husband will produce some very interesting, and potentially humorous home renovation stories to share.
